Thijs van Zanten is every inch a litigator. He advises on and litigates in a wide range of subjects, with a particular focus on more fundamental disputes in the field of insolvency law, business law, contract law and liability law, including directors’ and professional liability. Thijs has been admitted as a Dutch Supreme Court attorney. He therefore represents clients both in lower courts and in cassation proceedings and preliminary ruling proceedings before the Supreme Court, as well as in proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Court of Human Rights and the Benelux Court of Justice.

Thijs is professor of Agreement and Security at Groningen University. He is also a permanent lecturer for the specialist programme of INSOLAD/Grotius Academy. In addition, he regularly provides (in-house) courses for lawyers on Supreme Court litigation and appeal procedural law. Thijs is a member of the Insolvency Law Advisory Committee of the Dutch Bar Association, of the INSOLAD Committee on preliminary questions to the Supreme Court.

Thijs regularly publishes on various subjects, particularly in the field of insolvency law and procedural law. He is the chairman of the editorial board of the Dutch insolvency law journal, Tijdschrift voor Insolventierecht, member of the editorial board of the leading Wessels Insolvency Law Series, Serie Wessels Insolventierecht, and editor of the article by article commentary on Dutch insolvency law (Tekst & Commentaar Insolventierecht). He also regularly provides case notes for the legal journal Jurisprudentie Onderneming & Recht (JOR). In 2010, he won the first Publication Prize awarded by the Dutch Association for Civil Law with his publication on the position of the pledgee of claims in insolvency proceedings. In 2012, Thijs obtained his doctorate from the University of Groningen, the subject of his thesis being the impact of insolvency law on agreements entered into by a debtor before a statutory insolvency procedure is declared applicable to him.
